Pre-exposure prophylaxis and timed intercourse for HIV-discordant couples

Health Care, Medicine Comments Off

Oral pre-exposure HIV prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective to decrease HIV transmission in HIV discordant couples who choose to conceive naturally.

In a case series successful use of timed intercourse was described, combined with two dose pre-exposure tenofovir prophylaxis of the female partner of monogamous males under fully suppressive HIV therapy.

The cumulative pregnancy rate was 75 percent and there were no instances of HIV seroconversion.
