Basant Panchami is a Hindu festival celebrating Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge (Wisdom, learning, music and art) and is celebrated every year on the 5th day (panchami of the Indian calendar) of the Magh month, the first day of spring. On this day, children are taught to read their first word.

On this day, God of Love, Kamdev, is also worshiped. The festival is celebrated to invoke wisdom, consciousness to human beings. Basant Panchami is the Indian Valentine day and was started much earlier than the western people thought of 14th February as Valentine’s Day. [eMedinewS]
