We wish all our readers a very happy, healthy, safe, and prosperous Diwali. This day is celebrated on the day of Amavasya and is symbolized by inner happiness, lighting, or Purnima. Diwali celebrations also coincide with the terminal phase of Chaturmas, the four months of negative state of mind.

In Hindu spiritual Yagna, the process starts from first day of Navratri on Amavasya and ends up on Diwali, again on Amavasya. The first 10 days involve intense spiritual practice and the rest 20 days entails receiving its benefits.

Speaking about this, Padma Shri Awardee, Dr K K Aggarwal, President, HCFI, said, “On Dhanteras one gets the benefit of wealth. On this day, people worship silver items. No dealings are done, and people spend only to invest in silver and gold items for future needs of the family. After Navaratri and other festivals, people who have indulged in the process of purification, learn the true purpose of their existence. The inner ignorance and darkness go away, and one gets the true meaning of wealth and that is inner happiness. The day this happens is called Diwali where on the day of Amavasya (darkness) one gets internal lighting (Diwali). Diwali, therefore, is a one-month long spiritual Yagna with nine days of purification and 21 days of acquiring spiritual benefits out of it.

Adding further, Dr Aggarwal, who is also the Group Editor-in-Chief of IJCP, said, “Diwali is the only Amavasya where one does not do Shradh pooja. On Diwali Amavasya (falling in Chaturmas) one is allowed to start any new project. Even deaths on this Amavasya are considered auspicious (unlike on other Amavasya days). Let us all worship this Diwali in a positive mental state. This one month of purification of thoughts helps one in combating the depression phase seen in winter.

While it is important to enjoy the festivities, it is equally important to take certain precautions. Following are some tips from HCFI for a happy, healthy, and safe Diwali.

Candles One should be careful of candle pollution caused by those made of paraffin. Candles made from beeswax or soy, although more expensive, are safer because they do not release potentially harmful pollutants.

Sweets White sugar in sweets can lead to uncontrolled diabetes and weight gain in individuals. Adulterated khoya can cause GI upset. Artificial coloring in sweets can lead to cancer in the long run. Eating chocolates can add to calories in blood sugar. The best items for Diwali are fruits and dry fruits.

Fire hazards Diwali should not lead to fire with resulted burns and loss to life. Cracker particles can cause eye burn. In case of any burns, the affected part should be put in running water till the burning sensation goes away. Blisters should not be punctured, as they work like a natural dressing.

Safe dressing if medicated bandage is not available, one can use a piece of cloth and iron it. It will work like a medicated bandage.

Alcohol hazards Diwali is often used as an occasion to indulge in gambling and drinking. One should not drive after consuming more than 30 ml of alcohol in one hour. While gambling one should not argue with others as someone under the influence of alcohol may cause harm.

Pollution Patients with COPD (adult asthma) may experience worsening symptoms during Diwali. They should use wet clothes whenever they are exposed to smoke. Excessive noise pollution during Diwali day can cause hearing loss. It can also cause high blood pressure and mental irritation. One should wear ear plugs to avoid noise related ear injury.
